Les Grangeons De L'Albarine, Combernand, 2020
Why We Like It
We’ll work in revers on this one. I’m assuming you have tasted the wines from Les Grangeons and you want to find out even more about them. I can wholly recommend that you take a trip to Luc Baur’s website that chronicles his winegrowng, amongst other things. It’s a Web 1.0 treasure-trove of inflation about the geology off his vineyard, his approach to farming, and even his take on where to do some of the best trout fishing in the area.
It’s winemakers like this we love; those for whom winemaking is only one part of a whole lifestyle. From an agricultural background originally, he grew tired of growing crops that were focused on profit over any sort of ecological responsibility, so set up in the hills o Bugey to plug his own furrow with his focused apline wines.
What To Expect
Combernand, aka La Cluse des Peintres, is a parcel of 50 year old Chardonnay and Aligoté vines in the Bugey hills that has been farmed organically since 2014. It’s east facing aspect, high altitude and steep, stony hillside produce the focused, stony and citrus driven wines that we expect from these alpine regions. The bottling changes year to year depending on yields, and for the 2020 it was 100% Chardonnay. 11 month elevage in old oak brings a textural richness that plays with the acidity beautifully.
Chardonnay / 12.5% / Bugey, Savoie, France / 75cl
