Domaine de Terres Falmet, Carignan, 2022

£18.00

Why We Like It

Deserted, harsh and dangerous. These are the words used by winemaker Yves Falmet to describe the abandoned vineyards in Saint-Chinian he has reinvigorated into the domaine he calls Terres Falmet.

Growing up in Champagne, Yves spent time working on his family’s vineyards before heading off in search of something different; a masters degree in biochemistry to be precise. But as I’m sure many of you can appreciate, once the love for wine is in your bones, it’s hard to stay away. Time spent studying and working in France, New Zealand, Australia and the USA, eventually led him to the steep, wild slopes of the Languedoc.

Yves works the vineyard almost entirely by hand, following his own principals of rational ecological vineyard management. The vineyard itself has a perfect combination of north facing slopes that encourage slow ripening, and limestone / clay soils that provide enough water and nutrients in the baking heat of the south to stave off drought. This all results in some beautifully evocative wines.

What To Expect

The second the cork is out, you know where you are. Aromas of ripe dark fruit intertwine with dusty hillside herbs. Rustic tannin leaves you wanting equally rustic food. This is a wine for long summer nights outside as well as cold winter evenings by the fire.
